From waiting tables to carrying the Olympic torch – what’s the deal with ‘Heated Rivalry’?
The Canadian sports romance series ‘Heated Rivalry’ has taken the world by storm since its North American release in late 2025.
Written and directed by Jacob Tierney, and based on Rachel Reid’s books, the series follows a heated romance between two ice hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.
Since the release of the show, Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, who play lead characters Shane and Ilya, have seen overnight fame.
Prior to the show, the pair waited tables alongside pursuing their dreams in hopes of one day breaking into Hollywood. Now they are presenting awards at the Golden Globes and have lit the Olympic torch at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Whilst it’s clear the show was an overnight success; some might be wondering – “Why?”.
Some watchers may reduce the show to just a ‘steamy romance’ but it is much more than that for many of its fans. The story of two men finding love in a sport such as ice hockey, which is traditionally masculine, is both heart-breaking and inspiring for audiences.
The impact of the show on the queer community, especially those who are athletes, has proven to be monumental. Fans have been sharing their experiences online, showing how they resonated with the show.
In fact, real-life hockey player Jesse Kortuem, who walked away from the sport due to fear that he couldn’t reconcile his career and being openly gay, posted to Instagram, coming out after watching the show.
This inspiring feat from Kortuem led to his appearance on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ just two weeks after his original post. This real-world story highlights the importance of the show for queer people in sports, and the positive influence it has had on audiences worldwide.
‘Heated Rivalry’ has also proven extremely popular among straight female audiences.
Some have questioned why this is the case, as it is not entirely relatable for women.
Stars of the show Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams pondered the potent question when asked “Why do women like Heated Rivalry so much?” in an interview with ‘Them’.
Williams himself said it best, stating, “In a straight, hetero romance, usually you fall into stereotypes where the woman is the communicator, and with two men it’s sort of enticing to see that men are capable of having communication that can get them somewhere”.
Some straight female fans of the show have shared that watching a love story that lacks misogyny is more enjoyable to watch.
Storrie also said the show fits the ‘female gaze’ in the interview, as it portrays love entirely differently from what women are used to seeing. This narrative is refreshing for heterosexual women, yearning for something that is entirely unachievable for them, they watch with envy and fascination.
So, what is the deal with ‘Heated Rivalry’?
It was a hit for many reasons, not only is it entertaining and well made, but it also touches audiences on levels most writers could only dream of. Tierney adequately balanced a steamy romance and a complex love story, captivating audiences on a variety of levels.
It’s clear that ‘Heated Rivalry’ was just what television needed.
