The University of Strathclyde Law Clinic has enjoyed a successful evening at the Herald Society Awards at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow.
The Clinic’s Executive Committee won the award for “Team of the Year,” while the Clinic’s Administrator, Diane Inglis, was nominated for the “Unsung Hero” award.
The Executive Committee consists of staff members and student volunteers with responsibility for issues such as recruitment, training, IT, development and external relations. It also has elected members who cover ad hoc tasks and policy making to ensure the Clinic fulfils its objectives.
The Clinic was also previously successful in the “Team of the Year” category in 2012.
Commenting on the achievement, Clinic Director Donald Nicolson said “It is enormously gratifying that the Clinic’s Executive Committee has been recognised at these prestigious awards. It would be impossible for the Law Clinic to serve so many clients, provide some many community services, involve so many students and be so successful without the Executive Committee.
“While our Administrator, Diane Inglis, didn’t win in her category of Unsung Hero, she was up against very tough and very impressive competition. In truth, recognition of the Executive Committee is in no small way recognition of her work: as she is at the heart of almost everything the Clinic does. We all owe her a debt of gratitude,” he added.
The Law Clinic aims to improve access to justice in Glasgow and surrounding areas and has grown hugely since its foundation in 2003, currently boasting 274 student members.
In 2015/16 130 cases were concluded and it won or saved £97,408 for clients as well as securing a number of non-financial remedies.
The Clinic runs a number of projects in the community such as the Small Business Law Unit, the Criminal Convictions Unit and the Public Legal Education Project.
