Perhaps not the biggest event in the average Brit’s sporting calendar, especially with the fast-approaching 2016 European Championships, but this year is the 50th anniversary of perhaps the most extravagant sporting match of the year.
On 7 February, the biggest American Football game of the season was televised worldwide, with more than 100 million people expected to tune in. Despite being broadcast at the ungodly hour of 11.30pm, it drw in hundreds of thousands of British viewers.
This year, the game sees the Denver Broncos – led by probably future Hall of Fame inductee, Peyton Manning – come up against the Carolina Panthers, the team hotly-tipped to win their very first Super Bowl. The Panthers, having only lost one game this season (against the Atlanta Falcons), are expected to end Manning’s last hope of a second Super Bowl win, having been clinical all season thanks to Quarterback, Cam Newton. However, having had a poor season by previous standards, Manning looked much sharper in their previous game against the New England Patriots and could be a thorn in the Panthers’ side if not catered for. It’s his fourth Super Bowl trip in his whole career, and having only ever won one of those, Manning will be motivated for this game.
The Super Bowl is also known for the flamboyant half-time shows and this year’s will be spearheaded by British band, Coldplay. That won’t be all however, as it has also been revealed that Beyoncé and Bruno Mars will also be joining them – a star-studded lineup that is arguably bigger and better than last year’s Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz mix.
