Flick: Doctor Who

By Nicola McFadyen.

Doctor Who exploded back onto our screens on August 23rd with a feature length episode “Deep Breath”, to much fanfare from the BBC. As with every well-known programme they run, there was massive publicity hype to go along with it- including a “Doctor Who World Tour” which saw Peter Capaldi and Jenna-Louise Coleman going around the world (funnily enough) to publicise the return of the popular science fiction programme. With all the pomp, circumstance and secrecy surrounding it, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were about to view the resurrection.

Now, I am an avid Doctor Who fan, and I have been since its return in 2006. Prior to that, I spent many happy afternoons watching the “classic” episodes with my Dad, and waiting for the return of the new series. I was like a child before Christmas. I love Peter Capaldi, I really, really do. I have a sweary Malcolm Tucker poster on my wall and I was excited to see what he would bring to the role. It physically pains me to say it, but I couldn’t have been less impressed.

The first episode lacked a proper storyline, with lacklustre scripting and none of the wit or charm that I had expected from Capaldi. The plotline was full of holes, and it didn’t come to what I felt was a satisfactory conclusion- and the second episode was no better, with a story that seemed to plod on for forty minutes before any action took place. Perhaps, for me, my biggest issue is that Peter Capaldi is no David Tennant, but I really felt he would have brought new life to the show.  Sadly this was not the case, and I was left thinking “Doctor Who? Doctor Who Still Cares?”
