One of my favourite past times is the consumption of good food. Catching up with friends and family is made all the more better when there is something delicious to munch on. Moving to Glasgow for university has given me access to an amazing scene of restaurants and cafes and I thought it only fair that I share some of my favourites.

The Ottoman Coffee House

73 Berkeley Street G3 7DX

It’s no secret that The Ottoman Coffee House is excellent café as it sits at 38 in the list of the worlds top 100 coffeehouses. Founded in 2015, the specialty Turkish coffeehouse, provides a wide variety of roasts and coffee styles and a cosy atmosphere. On my second trip to the coffee house, I made the mistake of bringing my younger brother, who absolutely loves chicken. What was supposed to be a coffee and some cake turned into one of the best lunches I have ever had. My brother still longs for their half chicken grill, which was excellently spiced and a very large portion. I very much recommend going for more than a coffee.

The Hidden Lane Tearoom

Unit 8, 1103 Argyle St, Finnieston, Glasgow G3 8ND

Tucked away in Finnieston’s Hidden Lane, the tearoom is the definition of a hidden gem. The decorative plates and ornamental dolls provide the perfect setting for using their lovely teapots. Whilst the Afternoon Tea, which comes with all the bells and whistles of finger sandwiches and scones, requires a booking 24 hours in advance, the cream tea for two provides all you could need for an afternoon snack. For just £14 you get a pot of tea and one of their freshly made scones with clotted cream and jam. I would recommend upgrading to a tea cocktail for £1.20 and getting the London Fog, which is a mixture of earl grey, vanilla and steamed milk. I find the choice of scone quite exciting, whilst the classic fruit, plain and cheese can often be found there are normally some more adventurous flavours as well, in the past there has been Biscoff, apple and cinnamon and many others.

Shawarma King

113 King St, Glasgow G1 5RB

The winner of the best kebab house in Scotland for five years in a row, Shawarma King, sits under a bridge near Glasgow Green. It has perfected its basic menu of shawarmas, kebabs and sides, which come in quite large portions. The takeout spot is available on UberEATS but I would advise, if the weather permits, getting your food from the spot in person and making your way to Glasgow Green for an impromptu evening picnic.

Sister Midnight

61 King St, Glasgow G1 5RA

The Sister Midnight deli makes some delicious focaccia sandwiches. Good for takeout or sitting in they have their standard selection and sometimes a daily special, as well as soup of the day. My favourite has to be the Caeser salad sandwich which comes with plenty of lettuce, crispy onions and an anchovy dressing. Whilst this place is delicious having it every day would put a dent in your pocket, so I tend to go as a wee celebration to myself after handing in an assignment and sometimes I get one of the many cakes that they offer as well.
