Scottish football rolls on with a Saturday fixture card of three 3pm clashes and a later match in Dundee, as the tangerines welcome Hearts. Both Celtic and Rangers are in action on Sunday, after Europa League matches.
Kilmarnock v Aberdeen
Head to Head: 0-2, 4-0, 0-1, 1-0, 2-1
Recent Form: DLLDL v LLLLW
Kilmarnock appointed Neil McCann in a bid to boost their hopes of survival. So far, in his three games in charge, they have picked up just one point and remain five points from guaranteed safety. Last week’s 4-0 loss to Motherwell could prove to be particularly damaging. The 51-year-old spoke at his unveiling, saying one victory could help Killie “catch fire.” The win needs to come soon, and a crucial period awaits, with a match against St Mirren sandwiched in between games against Glasgow’s big two. Aberdeen are fresh off beating Kilmarnock’s relegation rivals, Livingston 6-2 and will be looking to dish out a similar scoreline. Although it won’t be that simple, Kevin Nesbit will build on a positive showing last week and earn the visitors’ three points.
Prediction: Kilmarnock 0-1 Aberdeen
Livingston v Motherwell
Head to Head: 1-3, 1-3, 1-4, 1-2, 3-1,
Recent Form: LLDDL V LWWDW
The search for a win goes on for a dreadfully disappointing Livingston side. Their winless league run of 22 games doesn’t make for pretty reading and to compound matters, they welcome a side that they have lost to in each of their last 6 meetings. With Hibernian playing Rangers, and Falkirk facing Celtic, the Steelmen know that a win this week could send them eight points closer to the summit. There’s little reason to think anything other than 3 points for Jens Berthel Askou’s side.
Prediction: Livingston 0-3 Motherwell
St Mirren v Dundee
Head to Head: 2-2, 1-2, 0-2, 1-0, 1-3
Recent Form: LLLLD V WWWLL
Since lifting the Premier Sports Cup, St Mirren’s appalling form has seen a team usually fighting for a place in the top six, slump to tenth. They welcome a Dundee side who recently showed just how much a few results can change the picture. The home side will be looking for a similar upturn in form when they face the team just three points above them. With key players missing, they won’t manage this, but crucially, they will avoid defeat.
Prediction: St Mirren 1-1 Dundee
Dundee UTD V Hearts
Head to Head: 1-0, 0-1, 1-0, 2-3, 1-1
Recent Form: DDWLL V LWWWD
Dundee United have had a full week and a half on the training ground after last week’s match against St Mirren was postponed. The Tangerines have been competitive against the top three, beating Celtic, drawing with Rangers twice and Hearts once, only to lose their home tie in the last minute. Hearts will be on a high after equalising late against Celtic last weekend. However, they will suffer a somewhat shocking defeat and see their lead at the top cut to just one point.
Prediction: Dundee United 2-0 Hearts
Hibernian v Rangers
Head to Head: 3-3, 2-0, 2-2, 0-1, 0-1
Recent Form: WWWDL V WWWWW
Despite decent league form, the manner of the recent Falkirk defeat paired with an embarrassing loss to Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup means that there is quite a cloud of negativity surrounding Leith at the moment. In contrast, Rangers are flying high, with six straight domestic victories. A tough European night away to Porto would have been disappointing, however the Ibrox side knew qualification was impossible anyhow heading into the match. It was always going to be a case of damaged limitation. Rangers have won the previous two league meetings by one goal. Expect this trend to continue.
Prediction: Hibernian 0-1 Rangers
Celtic v Falkirk
Head to Head: 4-0, 1-0
Recent Form: LLWWD V LWWLW
Just a couple of weeks ago, Falkirk made life incredibly uncomfortable for the Champions in their 1-0 home loss. Truthfully, it was a smash and grab victory that the visitors had no right in winning. Yet, as the 4-0 reverse scoreline at Celtic Park reveals, it’s a completely different type of game in the East End of Glasgow. For all the frustrations at Celtic, their home form has been good outside Wilfried Nancy’s sorry tenure. A 4-2 win over Utrecht last night ensured a place in the play-off rounds against an in-form Stuttgart side. On Sunday afternoon, they will return to winning ways on the domestic scene.
Prediction: Celtic 3-1 Falkirk
