Strath Union Election Results 2025: Record Turnout as Fraser Brown is elected President

As the votes were about to close, a mix of excitement and relief spread among the candidates for Strath Union roles.

If you were in the Strath Union at that time, you might have seen candidates wandering about, grabbing meals, but most importantly, keeping each other company and offering support. During their campaigns, they had become friends – rooting for each other while still hoping to win. Genuine friendships were born throughout this election process.

After 5 pm, Strath Union CEO Morna Simpkins began her speech by thanking “all the candidates who have put themselves forward, with all the work on their manifestos, their campaigns, etc., and to their teams who have supported them along the way.”

She then provided an overview of this year’s election: “We had 3,498 Strathclyde students cast a total of 18,336 votes,” highlighting the “brilliant” record turnout of 16.4 per cent – 4.4 per cent higher than the previous year.

Vice President Community Results Delayed

To the great disappointment of the Vice President Community candidates, Mrs Simpkins explained that “due to a complaint being lodged at the close of voting,” which needed to be investigated, “we will announce that result in due course.”

While the investigation was mentioned, no further details were provided regarding the nature or status of the complaint.

Despite their disappointment, the candidates understood the situation. “There are processes to be followed, so we’ll find out when we find out. I’m a bit disappointed, but excited to find out who wins,” said one of the candidates.

The results for Vice President Community were announced the following week. In the 7th stage of elections, Nikkie Steinback was declared the winner with 680 votes. After the announcement, Nikkie took a moment to thank everyone who believed in her and supported her throughout the campaign.

Wasting no time, she quickly turned her attention to her next goal—organising an event focused on mental health, which will take place on Thursday, March 13, from 11 am to 2 pm in the Student Union.

Fraser Brown Elected as Strath Union President

A massive cheer erupted as Fraser Brown was announced as the new Strath Union President, followed by a wave of congratulatory hugs. Taking to the stage with a beaming smile, he addressed the crowd:

“I want to say a big thank you to all the students at Strathclyde for supporting me this year. I’m very happy to see we have a high turnout – it’s going to make my job a lot harder with my manifesto pledge.”

He then expressed his gratitude to his campaign manager, all of his supporters, as well as his parents.

“I’m looking forward to starting in June and representing you all.”

Congratulations to all of the candidates! Your passion and engagement in making Strathclyde a better place for all students is admirable and inspiring.
