The former First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, has died at the age of 69.
Alex Salmond, Scotland’s First Minister from 2007 until 2014 collapsed moments after giving a speech in North Macedonia.
Salmond was most recently the leader of the Alba Party and former leader of the SNP from 1999 to 2000 and 2004 to 2014.
He was revered by many as a leading figure in Scotland’s charge for independence. He resigned as Scotland’s First Minister after the Yes campaign lost in the Independence Referendum in 2014.
Tributes have poured in from politicians across the UK.
The Prime Minister said “For more than 30 years, Alex Salmond was a monumental figure of Scottish and UK politics. He leaves behind a lasting legacy.”
The leader of the opposition and former Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak posted on X: Alex Salmond was a huge figure in our politics. While I disagreed with him on the constitutional question, there was no denying his skill in debate or his passion for politics. May he rest in peace.
Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, who was appointed the Finance Secretary by Salmond also posted on X: I am deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely death of the former First Minister Alex Salmond and I extend my deepest condolences to Alex’s wife Moira and to his family.”
Swinney also noted that Salmond had taken the SNP from the fringes of Scottish politics into government and led Scotland so close to becoming an independent country.
His cause of death is still to be announced.
