Les Garçons de Glasgow’s Jonathan Pryce embarks on a new Parisian Project
By Lindsey McIntosh
As the founder of Scotland’s most successful style blog, Johnathan Pryce certainly has a great deal to be proud of. Since its creation in 2009, Pryce’s Les Garçons de Glasgow has become one of Britain’s most influential and regularly followed style blogs. Originally only showcasing Scottish style from Pryce’s home region, the blog has come on massively in its short lifetime; the photographer now travels high and low across Britain and other parts of mainland Europe to document the unique styles of individuals from every cultural background.
Crucial to the blog’s huge success is quite simply the variety of people and style displayed via Pryce’s skilful camera lens. Travelling broadly allows Pryce to photograph a number of individuals of all ages from different cultural and economic backgrounds – these factors help to produce a variety of styles to inspire the blog’s readership. Rather than focusing on technical components of an outfit, Pryce prefers to display the purism of street style in his work; that fantastic, raw quality which separates ‘style’ from ‘fashion’ and that rare element of individuality within dressing which is often forgotten about in today’s glossy magazines, stuffed with mass produced fashion. Although not dismissive of designer labels and latest ‘It’ bags, Pryce prefers to focus on the visuality of outfits by not following the orthodox regime of the fashion blog – you will find no index of shops attached to the individuals he photographs, as is mandatory to so many other modern fashion blogs. Rather, he simply produces a series of striking images which reflect the character of the clothes worn by the individual.
A balance of fantastic style photography and hard work has unsurprisingly earned Pryce photography exhibitions with trendy high street store Urban Outfitters (which featured more than 30 arty frames of his work in the Glasgow store) as well as numerous style mentions in fashion publications and other style blogs, and a well-deserved nomination for a Scottish Fashion Award this year. And his latest creative endeavour? A new and exciting collaboration of culture and art with American artist Jim Haynes.
Parallel People is Pryce’s new photography exhibition, which is on display until the 1st of January 2012 at Haynes’ Atelier A-2 in Paris. The set of 18 photographs (all shot by Pryce) express the great importance of individualism whilst also highlighting the strong subject of style as a whole.
Although this collaboration between the American artist and Scottish fashion photographer will be a fabulous first, it does not mark Haynes’ first step into the expanding world of Scottish art and culture. Having been long involved with the Scottish arts, Haynes is a co-founder of the Traverse Theatre as well as a provider to the funds which allowed the opening of Britain’s first paperback bookshop in Edinburgh.
The exhibition promises to host an incredible and varied range of nationality and cultural art and will be Pryce’s first ever photography exhibition in Paris. So, if in Paris at any point over this chilly month of December, be sure to make an appearance at the Atelier as this certainly is an event not to be missed!
