At the end of November Strathclyde football announced their new partnership with the NHS group Breathing Space, a service which helps those people in Scotland experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Breathing space has been operating for around nine years and gives specialist advice and counsel to around 7,000 people a month, of whom most are men.
The group’s coordinator Tony Mclaren, himself a Strathclyde graduate, spoke candidly about his work and was enthused with the new deal and the support shown by the university and the club, stating that he saw the partnership as: “Something that’s going to grow and develop, we start this relationship with a view to expanding and maintaining our support for the club in whatever way we can. This initiative with Strathclyde complements our work with Motherwell and Celtic football clubs where the medium of football has been a great conduit for reaching young men in particular”
Mclaren added that: “While we hope it’s an issue you’ll never have to worry about, Breathing Space is somewhere that anybody can be open with their anxieties or worries in times of distress, men sometimes have a problem opening up about their problems and our service aims to provide support, particularly in the early stages”
Football club captain Jack Cummings spoke with appreciation and gratitude throughout the event, presenting Mclaren with a club tie to signify the partnership between the two, adding: “I think I speak for the whole club when I say that we’re very grateful and appreciative for the support Breathing Space have given to us and we hope we can repay some of that, it’s important to raise the profile of good mental and physical wellbeing among the student population, we’ll be on campus during mental health week to raise awareness in any way we can”
Strathclyde football 1st team have been unbeaten in all of their fixtures this season and will look to continue their outstanding form over the Christmas break into next season, the new sponsor will only add to the positive feeling that surrounds the group at the moment, who have promotion very much in their sights.
