Bold. Unapologetic. Unique. Energetic. New. When asked to describe XO in one word, this is what each of the girls said. These words perfectly express the band’s energy and passion for what they do.
But who are XO?
XO are a girl band composed of members from Essex, London, Liverpool, Derbyshire and Hong Kong. They are Zoe, Summer, Reanna, Emmy and Shali. Whilst they only formed last year, the girls have quickly risen in popularity.
How did they become XO?
After three months of touring schools, the girls soon realised that performing in front of people is what they do best. Meeting fans is a crucial part of this. They said: “We’ve met all of our followers and listeners in person; that’s really special and such an important part of our journey.”
Their successful school tour led to every date on their debut headline tour selling out. This included a recent show at the SWG3 club in Glasgow.
In preparation for this tour, they went to a writing camp in Stockholm, which they found to be “such a unique experience”. They also said: “It’s just been so interesting to see how the music industry works behind the scenes and seeing how many people goes into it. It’s so fun.”
On performing in Glasgow
The girls are “obsessed” with Scotland and Scottish culture. Whilst this was their first visit to Scotland, it seems that they are keen to return. They said, “Everyone is so happy here.” And of course, they were delighted to try Irn-Bru and deep-fried Mars bars.
Performers first
A huge part of XO’s brand is that they are “performers first”, so their music is catered to choreographers and dancers. They are passionate about having their own distinct sound as well as using “bold messaging” in a lot of their songs. Sabrina Carpenter is a huge inspiration for XO because of her innuendos and hidden messages.
Music videos
XO have already created some vibrant music videos that showcase their performative flair. My favourite is their ‘Ponytail’ music video because it feels so nostalgic and expresses girlhood in such a fun way.

What’s next for XO?
Perform. Perform. Perform. XO does not plan on slowing down. There’s talk of another headline tour, and the girls are hoping to appear at festivals next year. Their mantra is “stay live”.
As for right now, their debut EP ‘Fashionably Late’ was released this morning. This features eight upbeat songs that reflect the chaotic experiences of young people today. I am eager to see what XO does next.
