And now, a word from the President: February recap

Strathclyde students raise money for Palestine.

The shortest (and busiest) month of the year, as summarised by the newly re-elected Strath Union President, Eva Curran.

By Eva Curran (she/her)

Hello! Was that not the fastest month ever? First of all, THANK YOU FOR RE-ELECTING ME AS YOUR PRESIDENT! I honestly love representing you all so I can’t thank you enough for your faith in me and all the support. Aside from the madness of elections, it was another busy month. We’ve been protesting, campaigning, lobbying, and all that good stuff. So let’s dive into it.

Students from all over Glasgow rallied together outside the Scottish Parliament in protest against the proposed £100 million cuts to education. The National Union of Students (NUS) hosted various speakers including our very own VP Community Justyna. These cuts are a significant threat to Scotland’s education system. It means fewer staff and fewer opportunities for students. It’s completely unacceptable. Strathclyde will continue to fight for students and hold the Government accountable. It was Charity Month at Strathclyde and our students showed up. It’s fair to say that I spent way too much money on bake sales. Big thanks to all our students who participated! I worked alongside Strathclyde’s Muslim Student Association (SUMSA) to plan a fundraiser for Medical Aid for Palestinians. We walked 25 miles around Glasgow, representing the length of the Gaza Strip and I’m delighted to say that we raised over £6,000! A massive thank you to everyone who participated, shared, and donated. We had an amazing turnout with everyone in good spirits from start to finish.

As President, I sit on a lot of committees. It’s a really important aspect of my role as I can ensure that students’ needs are being prioritised at the university level. This month, I gave an update to the Senate, the governing body of the university. This platform allows me to highlight the prominent issues facing our students. The Student Exec and I met with the Principal and the University Executive Team to discuss the progress of the Strategic Framework. We have been working in partnership to achieve positive change for our students. You can check out our joint objectives here.

After VP Sport Molly highlighted the Participation Fund had run out, I worked with the University to secure more funding. This fund is so important to our Strathclyde community as it supports widening access to students to engage with sports, clubs, societies, and volunteering. The Exec and I also met with the Trustee Board. We spent time discussing possible threats to the organisation in the coming years. And to finish a hectic month, I ran my final campaign! After being VP Diversity and Wellbeing at City of Glasgow College, Women’s Rep for two consecutive years, and President last year, this is my final rodeo in the mad world of student politics.

Once again, thank you for re-electing me. I adore being your President so it honestly means the world that I get to do the job I love for another year. If you need anything: my Instagram is @evastrathpres and I host monthly drop-ins at Roasters, on the first Friday of the month at 12pm.

Thanks for an unreal month.

Lots of love Strathy gang,

Eva
