What makes Alfred Hitchcock one of the greatest directors of all time? Quite possibly his ability to bring tension to the screen that grips viewers and terrifies audiences. That being said, no Hitchcock film would be possible without the master scores that accompany them, none more so than one of his most famous: Psycho.
Psycho, the cult thriller and sheer masterpiece from Alfred Hitchcock that debuted on the silver screen back in 1960, plays host to one of the greatest film scores to ever grace our ears. This Halloween, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall will become a beacon of screeching violins and the soundtrack to our nightmares as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) bring Bernard Hermann’s score to life in Psycho Live.
Psycho will be screened in its entirety with the full soundtrack performed live. The RSNO are no strangers to this kind of event, having performed alongside the screening of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival. The RSNO also has a history or recording film music, though rarely the original used for the movie, they won a Gramophone Award for the recording of Herrmann’s soundtrack to Vertigo.
