At 75 years old, renowned Scottish comedian, Sir Billy Connolly, will this week be made an honorary doctor of The University of Strathclyde.
In the university’s June Graduation Award ceremonies, the Glasgow celebrity, along with several other notable individuals, shall be recipient of prestigious honorary degrees to recognise their contribution to greater society.
Speaking about the awards, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, Sir Jim McDonald said:
“Billy is a proud Scot and fantastic ambassador for the city of Glasgow.
“His comedy took the stories of growing up in the city to an international audience and his success is an inspiration to all.
“Billy was, and remains, one of the most successful and loved comedians of his generation and is one of Scotland’s national treasures.”
The start of June had already seen the unveiling of the creation of three murals installed in the Glasgow, which celebrate the life and work of “The Big Yin”.
Others receiving honorary degrees from the University are: Dr Max Nikias, president of the University of Southern California; Nigel Whitehead, Group Managing Director of BAE Systems; Nigel Cantwell, an international consultant on child protection; and Richard Hunter, Convener of Court at the University.
Those reviving honorary awards will join the 3000 other students, who will be graduating from the University this summer.
