1. What do you think is the biggest problem facing Strathclyde students and how do you plan to resolve that problem?
There is a high shortage of housing in Glasgow. Some landlords do not provide for students well enough. We should provide a letting agency for students. Loads of students ask me where they can get a part time job so it is about time we had a union job shop for part-time, casual, and seasonal work. This brings me to the issue of poststudy employment. Students say that they don’t know what do after finishing their degree. I would aim to work with local organisations to get opportunities advertised in unions, and cultivate better employment opportunities for students.
2. How does your previous experience in the Union qualify you for role of President?
In my time as Vice President of Advocacy and Diversity last year, I operated a liberation, welfare and wellbeing campaigns. We won over half a million pounds in compensation for students last year. The new crossing at Cathedral Street was something that students wanted and we made it happen. The above is just some of the things I did last year and, if elected, I hope to continue putting students first.
3. What do you offer that the other candidates don’t?
I bring the ability to think outside the box. As an international student with one arm, I am in a minority group, and my current involvement in the union gives me lots of experience to draw ideas from. I have a very approachable personality, and I actively try to cultivate this quality to make sure students feel like they can ask me anything. I proactively go out and campaign on campus, and I genuinely care about students and their student experience.
4. What have this year’s Exec. done well, and what needs to be improved?
Some of the team from last year have not been on level seven of the union as often, but instead have been actively talking to students, and asking how they can help. This should be the way that the students’ union moves forward. Last year’s exec. put the union in a better place. We increased the sabattical postions with the introduction of the Vice President of Support role, and this has worked out very well. Ultimately, we were well-focused and managed to acheive lots of great things for students. I hope this is something I can continue if I am elected.
