Strathclyde’s principal wins prestigious award

The University of Strathclyde’s Principal has been honoured with a prestigious award given by a major charity.

Professor Sir Jim McDonald received the Entrepreneurial Leadership Award in Science and Technology from the St Andrew’s Society of the State of New York on 1 October, at its Global Man & Woman of the Year Awards ceremony in New York City.

Sir Jim McDonald was given the award as he has been recognised as a major economic contributor in strengthening the University’s links with the business and industry sectors as well as international universities. His endeavours in creating an entrepreneurial culture among staff and students was also highlighted.

Following the award, Sir McDonald said: “I am delighted and honoured to have received this recognition from the St Andrew’s Society of the State of New York. Since the eighteenth century, it has provided valuable support to the State’s Scottish community and has played a significant role in fostering collaboration between the United States and Scotland.”

“We were pleased to have several of our US partners attend the event including NYU, CUNY and business leaders from the life sciences, biomedical and process industries.”

“As a leading international technological university, Strathclyde is well-placed to offer leadership in industry and the economy. In particular, our Technology and Innovation Centre is a very tangible sign of our wider commitment to undertaking world-class research and translating its outcomes for maximum benefit to society and the economy.”

Sir Jim McDonald also chairs the Independent Glasgow Economic Leadership board and received the Outstanding Contribution by a Business Leader award at the 2013 Inspiring City Awards.
