As an enormous music fan, going to concerts and gigs is an inseparable part of my life. I am sure many of you occasionally, or even on a regular basis, enjoy spending a night listening to some live music performed by a favourite artist of yours.

Glasgow with its eclectic and lively music venues is one of the best places in the UK to live and study. The town’s music scene offers melomaniacs the chance to see some of the biggest names in the music industry, as well as support the talent of fresh local and national artists. In other words, there is something for everyone’s taste.

The following list gives a quick overview of some of the best music venues in Glasgow:

King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut

Definitely one of the most iconic intimate music venues not only in Glasgow but also worldwide; King Tut’s is renowned for giving a platform to rising stars to showcase their talent. The long list of bands which have played there during their early years even includes Oasis, Coldplay and Biffy Clyro.

The SSE Hydro & SECC

The SSE Hydro opened its doors in late 2013 and is among the biggest indoor music venues in the UK. It has already hosted concerts by artists including Ed Sheeran, Beyonce and Elton John and prominent music events such as the MTV Europe Music Awards. Conveniently located next to the arena are the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) and the Clyde Auditorium, annually hosting a variety of concerts and other events.

Oran Mor

Located in the former Kelvinside Parish Church, Oran Mor is one of the best entertainment venues in the West End. One can go there to see not only gigs, but also intimate theatre performances or a fun night at the club.

The Barrowland Ballroom

The Barrowland Ballroom is another iconic music venue in Glasgow and one of the leading rock venues in the country. Some of the biggest names in the music industry have played here including Metallica, Bob Dylan, U2 and Muse.

O2 Academy Glasgow

Similarly to many large cities in the UK, Glasgow has its own O2 Academy, where many rising musicians perform sold-out shows. Amongst the bands and artists that have played here are The Killers, Passenger, Bastille and others.

O2 ABC

Located on Sauchiehall Street in the city centre, O2 ABC is a middle-sized music and club venue, frequently visited by students from across town for gigs and nights out.

Sub Club

If you are into electronic music, this is the place to visit. Sub Club hosts some of the best DJs and artists and is great for a night out with friends.

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall; City Halls; Old Fruitmarket

These three venues are great for people who prefer classical and instrumental music, which is predominantly performed here. The Celtic Connections Festival, a major Glasgow event at the beginning of each year, takes place mostly at these venues.
