The steps outside Glasgow Royal Concert Hall are to be demolished to make room for a £390 million Buchanan Galleries extension, despite protests from the public.
Glasgow City Council voted 11 to 4 in favour of demolishing the steps as part of the extension which is expected to be completed by 2017.
The decision was given the go-ahead at a planning meeting on 24 February, despite an online ‘Save the Steps’ petition receiving over 14,000 signatures, 307 letters of objection and a protest at the steps last month.
The steps are a popular seating and meeting area, and the spot was used by speakers on both sides of the debate during the independence referendum.
However, the council says the plans will help maintain Glasgow’s reputation as the UK’s second shopping destination after London.
The expansion will see the erection of an “entrance atrium” to the concert hall and shopping centre on Buchanan Street, and the car park will be demolished and replaced
The Donald Dewar statue will be moved further down Buchanan Street, just outside the Sainsbury’s on Cathedral Street.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said that the plans will unlock over £300 million of private sector investment for Glasgow, as well as generating 1500 jobs.
“We are justifiably proud in Glasgow city centre being the UK’s second biggest retail destination, but to ensure we remain in such a position new ways of attracting visitors and investors must be found. The expansion of the Galleries will help us to do so.”
However, Ben Bookless- who set up the petition– said the plan was “short sighted” and spoke of the empty buildings along Sauchiehall Street that have become “eyesores” and “could easily be renovated to generate revenue and create jobs.”
‘Save the Steps’ campaign coordinator, Aileen McKay, also criticised the move.
“The Council so readily claim that People Make Glasgow, but have displayed their true colours in this blatant contempt of these very people’s views: 11 individuals have gone against the repeatedly expressed opinions of tens of thousands.
An atrium simply is not as public as an outdoor space, despite the planning committee’s claims. Glasgow’s citizens need and deserve more public spaces, not fewer.”
