Douglas McGregor, a former head of the computer science department at the University of Strathclyde, has died at the age of 75.

Originally studying at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen, then chemistry at Aberdeen University, McGregor continued his post-graduate education by researching at Glasgow University, primarily in the field of crystallography.

His advances in crystallography with fellow student Ken Muir drove him away from chemistry and towards computer science – after completing his PhD, McGregor worked with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority for several years.

In 1972, he joined the computer science department at Strathclyde, only recently established, and hindered by the vast amount of computer programming languages competing for academic use.

With McGregor, the department developed their own programming language based on an existing American system, which improved the speed and efficiency of the department output.

Aged 38, he developed Hodgkin Lymphoma, undergoing chemotherapy for several years, before running the Glasgow Marathon twice, fully recovered.

Speaking of his research into video compression technology in 1997, McGregor noted that he hoped it could be widely used commercially.

In 1999, his department spun his research out as Essential Viewing Systems, a company specialising in video compression, led by Professor McGregor and Dr Richard Fryer.

A major stroke forced his retirement in 2002, but he continued to be active in university life, becoming heavily involved in Strathclyde’s Centre for Lifelong Learning.

In 2011, Essential Viewing Systems was sold to Digital Barriers for £4.85 million.
