Strathclyde University has launched an exciting new installation that shows how technology will change the cities we live in.
The City Observatory, currently based in the city centre’s Lighthouse, will allow visitors to explore interactive maps of Glasgow and other cities worldwide, along with histories of the cities and views of Glasgow’s cityscape.
A permanent City Observatory will be based in Strathclyde’s new Technology and Innovation centre which opens this term.
The installation has been created by the research-based Institute for Future Cities, whose director Richard Bellingham said it would give visitors “new understanding and insights into Glasgow.”
City Observatory is part of a wider research and teaching initiative which aims to “improve the quality of human life across the world.”
Leader of Glasgow City Council Gordon Matheson said that the installation was a part of the Future City Glasgow programme aimed to modernise the way the city operates.
Matheson said there is a “raft of innovations set to be unveiled in coming months” which include intelligent street lighting, new CCTV cameras and a city cycling app.
