The associate deputy principal for education at the University of Strathclyde, Colin Grant, has died.
Until 2009, Grant held the position of dean of engineering, after previously heading the chemical engineering department for 20 years.
Additionally, he served on the IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) council a number of times and in 1997 was awarded the organisation’s prestigious Arnold Greene Medal for ‘commendable long time contribution to the progress of IChemE’.
IChemE is a global organisation that welcomes both chartered colleagues and enthusiasts of chemical engineering, with offices in Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK.
The CEO of IChemE, David Brown, commented: “Colin was an excellent chemical engineer, teacher and friend, and did huge amounts of incredible services for IChemE.
“I’m sure I speak for all of us who knew and worked with him when I say he will be sorely missed.”
At Strathclyde, Grant notably invested his time in distance- learning degree programmes for students of industry, furthering the reach and influence of the university, with Grant himself stating that the schemes were ‘a marvellous opportunity to publicise the strengths of the university’.
Strathclyde’s principal and vice-chancellor, Sir Jim McDonald said: “Colin was a first-class chemical engineer who, as dean, led the faculty with vision and energy before moving to his most recent position as associate deputy principal for education where he made a huge contribution to the student experience.”
“He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.”
