Recent figures have revealed that record numbers of UK students are choosing to work or study abroad.
Last year over 14 500 students took part in the European Union’s Erasmus exchange programme, which offers students the chance to spend up to a year studying or working at another institution in the EU with a substantial amount of expenses covered.
The figures from the British Council, which manages the UK programme, showed that the number of UK Erasmus students is at its highest level since the programme’s launch in 1987.
It seems that in light of the increasingly competitive labour market, more students are opting to add an international dimension to their degree.
Ruth Sinclair-Jones, head of EU Programmes for the British Council, underlined the value of such an experience: “Erasmus is for all students, and is an ideal way to learn another language and culture.
“As the number of specialist foreign language courses decline in the UK, Erasmus is becoming even more essential. Research suggests that the UK’s students are aware of the benefits of overseas experience.
“The international experience offered through Erasmus has been shown to make a real difference in terms of people’s employability.”
Since the British Council took over the running of the programme in the UK, the number of UK Erasmus participants has doubled in six years.
The 2012/13 figure represented a 7% rise from the previous year, yet Ruth Sinclair-Jones was keen to stress that more progress can be made, stating: “The UK overall is only sixth in terms of total students participating in Erasmus; we lag far behind France, Germany and Spain, who have almost three times as many young people gaining vital skills which we all need to compete in a global market.”
However, there was further encouragement north of the border.
British Council data demonstrated that Scotland was outperforming the rest of the UK; 13% of the UK Erasmus participants belonged to Scottish institutions, whilst Scotland makes up only 8.5% of the population. The University of Edinburgh was the leading Scottish university in this regard, with 356 Erasmus students.
Last year there were fears that the future of the Erasmus programme may be in jeopardy as EU budget cuts took hold.
