ENGINEERING STUDENT and double swimming medal winner at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, Robbie Renwick has been named joint Strathclyder of the Year for 2011.
The Strathclyder of the Year award, which is given to staff or students who have contributed significantly to the University or to wider society, was split between Robbie and the University’s Major Projects Director, Professor Graham Wren.
Robbie, a second year Sports Engineering student at the University, took gold in the men’s 200m freestyle event and silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay. He is currently in training for this year’s World Swimming Championships in Shanghai and hopes to be in contention for the UK squad in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
He said: “It’s a great and exciting honour to get this award and to be in the company of such distinguished guests.
“In a way, I feel I’m representing Strathclyde students here. Strathclyde has been really good for me and is helping me to reach my full potential, both academically and enabling me to train in my sport as well.
“The past two years here have been great and there are another two years to come as well. The World Championships are coming up this summer and that wil be a massive event- training is going well but right now the focus is on my exams.”
Strathclyde Principal Professor Jim McDonald added: “We have great pleasure in making awards to members of Strathclyde’s community who have made outstanding contributions in their field and who have achieved at the very highest level.
