UNIVERSITY of Strathclyde graduate and professional footballer Kenny Deuchar has made a career out of banging in goals for fun – but it’s not just on the pitch where he is recognised for scoring top marks.

 The record-scoring star – known best for his time at big-spenders Gretna – graduated from Strathclyde with a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine as the club shot to overnight success. 

And the Livingston striker is enjoying this season in the Scottish First Division, after his side’s back-to-back promotions.

 “From a team point of view it would be good to consolidate our place in the First Division and have a decent run in one of the cups would be great,” said Deuchar, who originally graduated in medicine at Dundee University.

“From a personal point of view I really just want to enjoy my football as much as possible, obviously that is only possible if I am playing well and the team are also successful in what we are trying to achieve.”

Back in 2004, the practicing medical doctor was signed by, now obsolete, Scottish Third Division club Gretna and in his first season led them to the Second Division by smashing the record for most league goals in a season by scoring 38 goals in only 30 games. In total, he managed to score 63 goals in 93 appearances for the Raydale Park side as they rose to fame. 

Now the 31-year-old is hoping for more of the same this season.

Deuchar said: “I’m at an age now that I don’t have many years left playing at a good level in the professional game so I need to make the most of it. Another season full of goals would be great – anything above 15 and I would be delighted.”

 Off the pitch, Deuchar has just started his training to become a General Practitioner but will also be writing exclusively in the Telegraph with his column “Ask the Doc” in which, he will be answering the sporting injuries of our very own students.
