Basking in the anticipation of the Scottish Cup!

This weekend, the double-edged sword of glory and heartbreak returns as the Scottish Cup continues, and by Sunday evening we will have our semi-finalists.

The cup often delivers drama and a sliver of hope for some teams, and this weekend should be no different. Let’s kick it off with a reminder of the quarter-finalists: Falkirk take on Dundee United, Dunfermline are at home to Aberdeen, the Old Firm meet for the second time in a week, and capping off the cup action is St Mirren against Partick Thistle.

There is no better way to start a cup weekend than with Friday night football, and when you add a Premiership tie to that, we are really being spoiled. Falkirk, who at the minute are riding high on confidence, are at home to Dundee United. It is certainly an interesting match-up, as both sides have experienced ups and downs this season. However, all of that flies out the window when there is cup football. As the saying goes: expect the unexpected.

Dundee United last made it through to the semi-finals in 2021, whereas Falkirk visited Hampden more recently in 2023. In terms of form, both teams are coming in off the back of a win, which can do all the world of good for confidence on an occasion like this. They are two teams that are pretty evenly matched for this fixture, so for any neutral watching it could tip the pendulum either way. Most definitely a tasty game to kick off proceedings.

Saturday night’s competitors, Dunfermline and Aberdeen, will be just as keen to propel themselves over the line. Aberdeen, the holders, are clinging onto the trophy, but a dismal run of form suggests it may slip beyond their reach. Dunfermline, on the other hand, will most certainly fancy their chances, having already beaten Premiership opposition Hibernian to make it this far.

Dunfermline manager Neil Lennon is no stranger to cup success and has relished the glory of four Scottish Cups in his managerial career, so he understands the stakes of winning. Peter Leven, on the other hand, has never experienced the glory of lifting the Scottish Cup and will be eager to ensure Aberdeen remain the holders.

Dunfermline will certainly put up a fight, as their form has landed them firmly in a position to assume a promotion play-off place. Meanwhile, Aberdeen are only a few poor results away from a relegation scrap. Will a giant be slayed on Saturday night? Who knows, but it unquestionably adds to the thrill of the cup.

The one everyone has been waiting for — the all-important derby — sees Rangers face their Glasgow rivals Celtic on Sunday afternoon. Having just played seven days ago, in what was the most watched Old Firm match in two seasons (Sky Sports Scotland), this fixture could deliver even more drama.

The Old Firm has always been a historic encounter, and as they prepare to meet for the 450th time it may come as a shock that this is the first time since 2004 they have faced each other at the quarter-final stage. They did meet in the round of 16 in 2011, but since then their meetings in the competition have largely been reserved for the semi-finals and finals.

The sides had to settle for a draw last Sunday, and it was very much a tale of two halves, with Rangers in the driving seat in the first 45 minutes before Celtic turned things around and dominated the second period. With the prospect of another trophy lift, neither side will want to throw this opportunity away lightly. However, for those around them looking on, there may be a sense of relief when one inevitably drops out.

The fixture rounding off the cup action comes from Paisley, as St Mirren battle it out with Championship outfit Partick Thistle. St Mirren have already secured a cup this season and will be looking to make it a double, but given they are in the middle of a relegation scrap, that dream may be slipping away.

Last season, Partick Thistle made an early exit in the third round, so they have already bettered that record. Given their fine league form, there is every possibility they have the quality to knock St Mirren out.

With the weekend drawing ever closer and the path to the Scottish Cup becoming clearer for these teams, we will all be watching on — some of us from behind a cushion in anticipation of cup glory.
