The Definitive Christmas Ranking List: Drinks Edition

We’re all familiar (or we should be) with Editor- in-Chief Danny’s award nominated Christmas dinner ranking from last year. Now, he’s passed me the baton to continue the chaotic Christmas leaderboard with a much anticipated (by me) sequel.

So, without further ado, here’s my ranking of the ultimate Christmas bevys, as someone who very much enjoys a wee scoop.

DISCLAIMER: These are all alcoholic drinks, apologies to any non-drinkers (only a few weeks till dry January if you get what I’m saying).

Sixth place: Eggnog

Easily last place. Have I ever tried it? No. Will I ever? Absolutely not. Described on Wikipedia as ‘egg milk punch’. Sorry, I’m vegan. Wouldn’t touch it with a 49-and-a-half-foot pole. 1 star.

Fifth place: Bailey’s

Yes, I’m still vegan, but I could be found sipping on a Bailey’s if slight nudge came to push. Extra points for versatility – Baby Guinness, Irish Coffee, Boozy hot chocolate? Need I say more?

Fourth place: Prosecco

Painfully basic but also incredibly classic. Nothing exciting, but a little bit o’ the bubbly never misses. Better when mixed with orange juice.

Third place: Mimosas, not to be confused with samosas (it has been known)

The only acceptable drink for the crack of dawn on Christmas morning. I’m talking roll out of bed in your Primark Gremlins pyjamas, stumble down the stairs and pop that prosecco OPEN. Acts as a festive alarm clock for the rest of the house. Also, the Vitamin C will beat that Christmas cold before it fully comes on. Probably.

Second place: A Wee Dram

It’s 9pm on Christmas day. You’ve been boozing since that first Mimosa at 10am sharp. Stomach full and head empty, you’re five minutes from falling asleep on the sofa, paper crown on head. Only one thing can save you. One sip of a Drambuie will have you shooting up in your seat for another round of Wii Sports. Even better if it’s a rusty nail (Drambuie mixed with whisky).

First place: Mulled Wine

And the winner is, of course, a classic Vin Chaud. If I could drink this stuff out of my Stanley cup in a 9am lecture I would. It’s cosy, it’s Christmassy, and it’s delicious. Also, have you ever mulled your own wine? It’s a whole event – get your Phoebe Bridgers Christmas single on and a couple of besties. Get your festive spices, some oranges and a cheap bottle of red. Super wholesome.
