Sports Union Rocks!

Strathclyde Sports Union has opened its doors to host Rock Up Sports Club (RUSC) an hour dedicated to playing a sport in a fun and new way. No membership to the gym is required! It’s free.

Today the sport is Badminton and the challenge has been laid down for people to come along and have fun even if they have never played before.

Ian Crawford, from the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) gave a talk on the issue of mental health before the games commenced.

“I’m the national program manager for SAMH and we’re trying to get students to recognise the link between positive physical activity and mental health. But also that it will make them more aware of mental health problems, Scotland has an atrocious track record for mental health.  1 in 4 people will  experience a mental health problem at some stage in their life however  today is also about giving them advice so that they know where to go for support. ”

The idea is for a free club without the pressure of worrying about leagues and cups but more those interested in playing sport who perhaps don’t have the time commitment needed for playing in a team.

Iain Stewart, Strathclyde’s sports development officer, commented on the key aspects of the club:

“Rock up Sports club is not about winning or being competitive, it’s getting an hour of physical activity every week.

“It allows you to be as flexible as you want with no training or pressure, and to get healthy and burn off some calories in the hour.”

Overall the Rock up sports club is a new way to attract people into trying something new or to rediscover an old passion for sport; without the pressure of joining a team or the financial commitments.

The Rock Up Sports Club continues in the centre for Sport and Recreation at 4pm to 5pm More info can be found at;
