Top Five: Books to Read This Summer

With the much-anticipated summer break almost within touching distance, we will soon find ourselves with a lot of free time on our hands and no idea what to do with it.

If you are lucky enough to be going on holiday soon, or having some relaxation time at home, here are five reading recommendations for how you could spend your summer break instead of staying indoors and binge-watching more Netflix like you did when procrastinating (sorry, studying).

  1. Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I have no doubt you will have heard about the movie Love, Simonwhich seems to be The One Everyone Is Talking About right now. It has gained great press for the way it handles LGBT issues, but it is still always best to read the book before watching.

  1. Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton

A comical but relatable memoir on growing up and finding all different types of loves along the way.

  1. Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge

In what the Observer called a ‘wake up call to a country in denial’, this award-winning non-fiction speaks about how frustrating it is for the discussion of racism in Britain to often be led by people who aren’t affected by it. A must-read for fans of the likes of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

  1. The Elizas by Sara Shepard

If you are still feeling the gaping hole after Pretty Little Liars came to a halt last year, then the latest book by the author behind the story might be exactly what you need when it is released on the 17th April.

  1. Any book series

The long break makes for a great time to read full series of books when you don’t need to take a long break between them to catch up on uni work and end up forgetting what has happened so far. If, for some reason, you haven’t read the Harry Potter series, then this is a great place to start. It’s basically a rite of passage to read them in your life at some point.
