By Leah Buist

The month of October consists of 31 days of the year that are dedicated to our most elaborate fears, to the things that go bump in the night and to the shadow we see in our peripheral vison when no one’s around.

Granted, being scared isn’t for everyone. But for those who can handle it, what better way to celebrate a month of horror than to be immersed in fear itself through the medium of film. And this year, Netflix has a great selection of creepy horror films to sink your fangs into this spooky season.

Based on the book series Fear Street by the American author R. L. Stine, the trilogy is the first adaptation of the horror authors supernatural series of novels. Set in 1994, the first instalment of the trilogy follows a circle of friends who accidently conjure a supernatural evil whom, according to town myths and legends, is responsible for the death of Shadyside town members for the past 300 years. In order to finally put an end to the suffering, protagonist Deena must put the pieces of the past together and learn more about the evil she is forced to deal with. This is why we are transported back in time in the second and third films, as we discover more about the ghostly evil and its origin. Can Deena learn enough about how it all began to put a stop to its gory reign before it’s too late?

Another horror film based on a novel, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is an adaptation of a children’s book series of the same name by Alvin Schwartz. Set in the autumn of 1968, a group of friends explore a nearby haunted house as the night creeps in on the evening of Halloween. The protagonist, Stella and her friends discover an ominous book of short stories hidden away in the house. And the stories aren’t exactly pleasant or have a happy ending. It’s up to Stella to stop the malevolent spirit before it takes all of her friends. This film is definitely a creepy one and has a few jump scares too, just to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Army of the Dead is another enjoyable zombie horror that can be described as Ocean’s Eleven if it were set in a zombie apocalypse. Yet with Vegas being famous for its mega casino-hotels a lot of money lies untouched within the new zombie civilisation.
