Refreshers’ week: Entertainment starting off the new semester

Refreshers’ Week starts with a bang at the Union on 15 January with a variety of events planned. For all those reminiscing about September’s Freshers’ Week, look no further.

From quizzes and workshops to eating, drinking and partying, there is something for everyone with plenty of opportunities to let off steam before the hard work starts again. Rather then following a traditional ‘stall format’ clubs and societies invite everyone to join in on their Refreshers’ events.

Now, Refreshers’ Week is not just for first year students. When asked if he planned on attending, third year Law student, Steven McLaughlin, said “I would probably go and check it out. I go to Freshers’ every year. I didn’t go this year due to my semester abroad but I would have if I had been here. I’ve been to three Freshers’ Weeks now.”

“I think it’s a good way to get everyone ready for the second semester – to bring everyone back into the university environment before sending them back into the classroom.”

Liam McCabe, Vice President of Volunteering and Development at the Union said, “I would absolutely encourage students to take part… there’s never a bad time of the year for students to get involved in what’s on offer at The Union.” Student groups genuinely change people’s lives and are often the source of the most vivid and meaningful memories you will have after you leave university, not to mention a place where you can make lasting friendships and learn transferable skills.”

One event to look out for is the Welcome to Community Volunteering meeting being held on 16 January from 17:30-18:30 in which students can hear pitches from local voluntary organisations. Signing up for one is not mandatory, consider it a good way to learn about opportunities for the future.

If partying is more your style, the Sports Unions Takeover is the place to be. From 4pm until late, the Union bar will host a sports quiz and then a DJ set until the early hours.
