Calvin Hepburn has been elected President of the University of Strathclyde’s Student Association in the 2017 Big Student Elections.
Hepburn, current VP Sports and Wellbeing received 1614 votes out of the total 3206 votes cast. Runner-up John Agbonrofo gained 1113 votes and Thomas McEachan came in third with 415 votes.
The President-elect thanked his campaign team and fellow candidates during his acceptance speech;
“Last year I was sports president and this is the first time someone from sports has moved over to president. I’m a little bit nervous about how this goes but hopefully you all don’t hate me too much!”
Candidates elected for Vice President positions are as follows;
Volunteering and Development – Liam McCabe
Support – Keith Burns
Sports and Wellbeing – Habibul Liton
Education – Mohammed Muftahu Alhassan
President Diversity – Taylor Lai Wa
Current USSA President Raj Jeyaraj gave a closing statement congratulating the successful candidates and thanking everyone for their efforts during the elections. He jokingly hinted at the challenges facing those elected in the upcoming year; “To all of the candidates who didn’t get elected you’re in for an easy year compared to those who did.”
Guest speakers Ross Greer, MSP and Zara Kitson from the Scottish Green Party spoke at the event held in Strathclyde University Students’ Union and highlighted the challenges facing students such as inequality, poor housing and transport costs.
