The University of Glasgow’s £1 billion plans to expand its campus in the redevelopment by a 14-acre site in Glasgow’s west end have been approved.
The plans to revitalise the former Western Infirmary by expanding the University’s campus was given the green light at a council planning meeting earlier this month.
The University plans to create a new public square amongst the academic building as well as creating space for new shops, restDiaurants, hotels and residences. The aim is to create a campus that will attract some of the best staff and students from across the globe.
Professor Anton Muscatellia, principal of the University said: ‘We’re in the process of completing a mass planning exercise which will look at how the site – not just the Western Infirmary but the whole of Gilmorehill – will be redeveloped.’
‘From the university’s perspective it will be a learning and teaching hub, which is around creating a state of the art facility for students to have both formal teaching spaces and also in less formal learning spaces using the latest technology.’
The new buildings are to be designed to make the learning experience as cooperative as possible with no fixed seating in lecture halls, allowing staff to walk among the students. Students will be able to ask any questions and receive direct feedback from interactive screens.
Out of all of the councillors who met to discuss the plans, only one voted against the proposals. A full council meeting will be held on February 16 to discuss the plans further.
The investment, once fully approved, will be one of the biggest education infrastructure projects in Scotland’s history and is set to create around 2500 new jobs in the local area.
A spokesperson for the University said: “We are delighted to have received support for our plans at today’s meeting.
“This is an interim but important stage of the planning process. The campus masterplan is due to go before a full council meeting on February 16, 2017, which we hope will give planning approval for this exciting and ambitious development which will transform the University’s teaching and research provision as well as enhancing the amenities of the city’s West End.”
