A Durham University student has been jailed for sexually assaulting a woman as she slept.
21-year-old Samuel Bunyan had been on a night out to celebrate her birthday in June last year, in Durham. At the end of their night, they returned to her room to watch videos together.
The woman then fell asleep. Durham High Court found that when she woke up, her jumper was around her neck, her bra was unclasped and she was suffering pain in the groin area.
She burst into tears when she realised that Bunyan was lying in her bed with her and cried herself to sleep whilst still feeling the effects of the alcohol consumption from her birthday.
She stated that she would rank herself a “seven out of ten” drunk before she retired to bed.
When she woke up again, she sent a message on Facebook to Bunyan. He claimed that nothing had happened other than him falling asleep next to her in her bed.
When she pressed him further, he admitted that he had “briefly” sexually touched her and that he was “sorry” for doing so.
The second year Physics student has been known to be good-natured before the assault. His barrister, Katherine Goddard, stated that he was “racked with genuine remorse” and that this offence was a single blemish in his background as a sufferer of depression.
Bunyan admitted to two counts of sexual assault. He has been jailed for two years and eight months.
Judge Christopher Prince said that despite his many “glowing” character testimonials, it was necessary to impose an immediate sentence due to the fact that Bunyan “specifically targeted a vulnerable victim” because of her drunkenness.
Prince also imposed a restraining order forbidding any contact with the woman.
There have been 36 allegations of rape or sexual assault at Durham University since 2015.
