Liberal Youth are giving 20 students the chance to travel to the European Parliament in Brussels 7th-8th November and present a petition to save the Erasmus exchange pro-gramme.
Students across the UK are invited to enter the competition by submitting a brief video diary about their Erasmus experience, or their plans to take part in the programme in fu-ture.
Almost 10,000 people have backed a petition launched by the Liberal Democrats to save Erasmus that will be delivered to Downing Street and European leaders following party members overwhelmingly baking a motion calling for the Erasmus scheme to be pre-served alongside vital European research cooperation.
Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson John Pugh has written to Brexit minis-ter David Davis demanding he make a clear commitment to protecting the Erasmus stu-dent exchange scheme.
He wrote: “This Erasmus scheme is one of the EU’s greatest achievements, giving thou-sands of young people each year the chance to learn a language, gain valuable skills and experience a different culture abroad. Yet the result of the EU referendum has the put the UK’s participation in the Erasmus scheme in doubt, meaning future generations may lose this unique opportunity to study abroad. I therefore urge you to make a clear com-mitment to doing all you can to ensure that UK students can continue to benefit from this scheme.”
Since it was initially set up, over 200,000 UK students have benefited from Erasmus. Around 100,000 more young people in the UK were expected to go on Erasmus from now until 2020, benefiting from EU funded grants to cover tuition, travel and living costs. Separate schemes also give young people in vocational training the opportunity to do ap-prenticeships abroad.
