In recent weeks and months, there has plenty of excitement over one specific sport, and over a couple of specific people.
Mixed Martial Arts has taken a huge amount of publicity this past while thanks to huge characters such as the former Women’s UFC Bantamweight Champion, Ronda Rousey, and current UFC Featherweight Champion, Conor McGregor. Both fighters have made names for themselves for their impressive abilities, and have also attracted huge interest in the sport as whole.
Whilst the internet (aka, sites such as The LAD Bible) have boosted unparalleled hype over the two athletes, they also done quite a lot by themselves via interviews and press conferences. Their actions in the octagon have also been impressive, that is however, until recent fights.
With the internet “hype trains” expecting Rousey and McGregor to completely flatten any opponent, both have been undone. Rousey especially was surprising, having never lost a professional fight until her November matchup with Holly Holm, and McGregor followed suit following a defeat against Nate Diaz.
The one problem that these defeats face is that the hype and suspense from new fans might be broken. Those who just watch to see whether McGregor or Rousey are superhuman may rest on what they’ve seen in their defeats and never tune in again. Combat sports such as Boxing may once again take centre-stage as people find a new “bandwagon” to jump on (such as Floyd Mayweather) and ultimately leave their interest in MMA.
However, the more compelled viewers of the sport will notice something different. This is a sport where there is much more than punches and big-talk. This is a sport where one wrong move, one gap in technique can be exploited and can ultimately be the difference between a title or a loss. This sport, in essence, is like chess with clenched fists.
One can not truly see all there is in MMA by following bandwagons and watching whoever they think will rule the sport. Yes, they are compelling characters and their personalities have attracted many viewers, but if the sport is to finally step into the mainstream, viewers must peel away and look at the bigger picture.
This is more than just two, three or four people.
