A new street food festival debuted in Glasgow this month.
StrEATery happened for the very first time the weekend of 26 and 27 September in a venue well-known for its support to young artists, The Briggait.
Inspired by the rich and artistic street culture of London, a city that happens to be her hometown, Vanessa Gilpin brings to the heart of Scotland a new tradition – an event that combines the right amount of food and art to match the fast-paced life of Glaswegians.
Gilpin said: “It’s a monthly street food festival that celebrates all things that make Glasgow’s culture, offering a diverse and everchanging mix of food, music and art.”
”It was initally an idea that I garnered inspiration from London. I love how vibrant the street (food) culture is there, the mixture of sights, smells and tastes you can enounter at these types of events.”
“When it comes to Glasgow, I wanted to incorporate three elements of the city that stand out for me personally: great food, talented musicians and a thriving art community. Hence they are all combined to make StrEATery the festival it is.”
Local people were warmly welcomed by Mighty Mexican, Smoak, FireBird Alfresco, Crema Caravan, and Glasgow favourite Babu Street Kitchen – a great variety of food teasers that had people queing all day under the wide dome.
It is a family-friendly event welcoming both young and old that offered games plus plenty of running space for the wee ones, and craft beer alongside live music for the grown-ups.
Over 5000 people pressed ‘Going’ on Facebook, and there were more than thousand people on the very first day of the event.
Gilpin was happy with the festival’s debut, saying: “Yes, it was an overall success. Attendence was high over the weekend, showing these types of events are in demand and people really warmed to the concept, we really had some great feedback. It set a benchmark, but as with everything there are a few improvements but it gives us something to achieve for next time.”
Gilpin says she intends to continue the festival and soon enough comes the second edition. StrEATery Spook Feast is happening on the last saturday of the month, 31st October, once again in the Briggait.
”We are giving it over the Halloween Theme, so expect more traders, more activities…..and a few spooky suprises!”
