I’m writing this pretty much fresh off the plane from Croatia after Dimensions Festival, and it is safe to say my brain is feeling a little fried. There is nothing better than partying in the sun, with all your best pals, to some of the finest DJs in the planet, in an abandoned fort on the Croatian coast.
Glasgow, comparatively, does not scream out to be the ideal summer party location. Nor does it whisper it. It is hard to make any claim that Glasgow is great for summer partying after the weather we have had over the last year.
A few noticeable changes have happened over the summer to the Glasgow clubbing scene. Notably, Saint Judes has reopened its doors with the club section launching as the disappointing Lola’s, which has kept no ounce of any of the ingredients that used to make Saint Jude’s the fairly decent venue it once was. Once a rival to the Sub Club and La Cheetah in terms of the variety and scope of underground acts it used to book, Saint Judes has now turned into a near carbon copy of the generic and commercial G1 venues it aimed to go against. Expect average student club nights based on lad culture and booth packages. Avoid.
Secondly, Police Scotland’s brutal attack on the Arches finally ended in the tragic closing of one of Britain’s finest arts spaces – not only a clubbing haven, but a forward thinking theatre, exhibition and general creative space. SWG3 is picking up some of the flack, and various sources have noted that they are planning a large expansion to the space, but the damage this has done and will continue to do to Glasgow cannot be understated.
Alas, not all is to be disheartened about. Fresher’s week is upon us, and whether this is your first time in Glasgow or not, there are many nights on that will soon become your favourite places to go during your time here. Here’s a pick of my favourites for the week ahead to get you started.
Tuesday 15th: I AM Firth Birthday with Midland. One of Glasgow’s best student nights celebrates its fifth birthday with dance heavyweight Midland.
Thursday 17th: Stereotone x Partial present Deadboy at La Cheetah. Our favourite selection for the week. Genre defying. Expect carnage.
Friday 18th: Numbers x Dekmantel present Jackmaster, Fatima Yamaha (Live), Spencer, Dekmantel Sound System + Special Guest at the Art School. Will be one to remember. Tickets are like gold dust.
Lezure Presents Maurice Fulton at the Mash House. Technically in Edinburgh, but 100% worth the bus through. Best night in the capital.
Angles Flat Party at Flat 0/1. Party tunes in a bar that looks like an old flat. Even better than it sounds. Also, always free entry.
Saturday 19th: Subculture with Harri & Domenic. Glasgow’s most loved residents play all night at the foundation of modern Glasgow clubbing, Subculture.
Haus Dimensions at Nice n Sleazy’s. A musical journey of complex composition at one of the best basements in Glasgow.
There are, of course, many more worthy club nights. There are bars, venues and clubs that have not received a mention, as there is too much going on to squeeze into this small section. Be brave; try new things, new places and new crowds.
