Dance floor pop at one moment and piano led ballad the next, Rae Morris’s captivating, power-house vocals, reminiscent of greats such as Grace Slick and PJ Harvey, tie her debut album ‘Unguarded’ together. The English singer song-writer performed at the BBC Introducing stage at the Leeds and Reading Festival in 2011 and since then has supported artists such as Bombay Bicycle Club, Tom Odell and Noah and the Whale.
Morris’s lyrics deliver startling intimacy, woozy with young love and heartache, almost disarming in their emotional honesty. The shimmering synths, breathy tones and wispy electronics have drawn several favourable comparisons to Ellie Goulding. The title track, Unguarded, was named free single of the week in 2014 by iTunes. Smoky vocals, backed by a percussive thump redolent of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’, create a moody and histrionic single which adds to the retro feel of the album.
The dancefloor-ready tracks ‘Cold’ and ‘Love Again’ demonstrate a clear pop sensibility on Morris’s behalf. However, the immaculate sheen atop some of these songs occasionally smothers the lyrical rawness. This overproduction, fortunately, does not completely choke the album. Morris’s earlier piano ballads serve as timely breaks in which her wonderfully haunting voice is given some necessary space and freedom. You can’t help but latch on to those moments, mostly in the second half of the album, where Morris’s voice is given free rein to entrance the listener, such as in the song ‘Not Knowing’.
The album title, ‘Unguarded’, evidently refers more to a sense of vulnerability rather than recklessness. Track to track this lilting melancholia feels refreshing and endearing. The problem is that it can feel a little too polite over an entire album length.
