Inquisition continues the story from where Dragon Age II left off: during the civil war between Mages and Templars, the Chantry arrange for the leaders of both sides to negotiate a truce. But just as the parlay begins, something goes horribly wrong. A massive explosion of magic destroys the temple and shoots skywards, tearing apart the heavens and pouring demons forth on to the world below.
A short prologue sees your created character wake up as the only survivor of the explosion, marked by the same tainted magic which destroyed the conclave. You then take on the role of The Inquisitor, tasked with protecting and restoring peace to Thedas.
This third instalment in the Dragon Age franchise is full of breath-taking detail, countless hours of possible side-quests and exploration and enough background lore to rival Middle Earth or Westeros. While at first this may feel like filler, it doesn’t take long to appreciate the effort which has evidently gone in to contextualising all of these aspects.
Bioware seem to have hashed out the weaker plots and linear gameplay of previous titles and delivered a well-rounded game. And they’ve even planned for the eventuality of the main plot exhausting your interest, for it quickly becomes superseded by the story the player creates for themselves. The type of leader you choose to become is integral to your experience of the game: your decisions affect relationships, whether different factions will assist you and how your enemies deal with you.
Despite the somewhat questionable fullness of the story, the truth is that Dragon Age: Inquisition delivers exactly as it should. The main point in the game isn’t about beating the bad guy, it becomes about how you get there and what you do along the way.
