Glasgow eagerly awaits summer 2014 and the hosting of the Commonwealth Games, however sport is not the only thing we have to look forward to. On March 13th the Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival launched, announcing the 18 groups that will represent the UK. The Games have provided a unique opportunity for Glasgow to showcase its culture. Fruit of the ‘Get Scotland Dancing’ initiative, the festival will bring together 36 groups for a 3 day programme of performances and workshops from the 10th till the 12th of July. As part of the launch, I – along with some lucky commuters in Central Station – were treated to a taste of what is to come from four of the Scottish groups: Blast, Ihayami Fusion, Shhh Dance and National Youth Dance Company. The four completely different performances highlight exactly what YDance Creative Director Anna Kenrick is excited for: “With such a variety of styles and themes presented by these talented young groups from across the Commonwealth, we’re really looking forward to welcoming them all to Glasgow this summer.”
What struck me first when the performances began was ‘Aren’t their feet cold?’ as I watched Ihayami Fusion brave the icy floor of Central Station barefoot, yet they remained focused – this composure maintained and mirrored by the other groups as they held masterful dance poses during photos.
