Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Strathclyde University principal, has been awarded for his outstanding contribution as a business leader.
He was honoured at the Herald’s inaugural Inspiring City awards, where awards were given to those who have played a key role in aiding growth and prosperity within Glasgow.
The awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel was hosted in conjunction with Glasgow Chambers of Commerce and Glasgow’s new brand: People Make Glasgow.
The judging panel paid tribute to his achievements: “Sir Jim has been instrumental in establishing the university’s distinctive position in the UK’s higher education sector and it is now regarded as an international technological university with strong roots in engineering, science, business, the humanities and social sciences.”
He was honoured alongside Scottish entrepreneur and University of Strathclyde Visiting Professor Sir Tom Hunter, who was presented with a lifetime achievement award.
Sir Jim said: “This award is yet another milestone for the University of Strathclyde and recognises the success the University has had in working with business, industry and the city’s executive leadership to enhance Glasgow’s reputation.”
After winning the University of the Year accolade at the Times Higher Education Awards last year, the business award represents further good news for Scotland’s third largest university.
Strathclyde will be looking to follow up on that success at this year’s Times Higher Education Awards in November; where the University is in the running for Entrepreneurial University of the Year and the Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology award.
